Treatment at a glance

Electrotherapy

  • What it is

Electrotherapy applies controlled low- and medium-frequency electrical currents — such as TENS, interferential or galvanic currents — through skin electrodes to relieve pain, stimulate muscle and reduce inflammation.

  • Who it's for

Guests with chronic musculoskeletal pain, nerve-related pain, muscle weakness or spasm, and those in orthopaedic or post-injury rehabilitation.

  • Expected results

Reduced pain, less muscle spasm and improved local circulation and muscle activation over a course of sessions.

How it works

Therapeutic currents act in several ways: they modulate pain-signal transmission at the spinal cord (the 'gate control' effect), prompt the release of the body's own endorphins, drive rhythmic muscle contraction to counter weakness and spasm, and increase local blood flow. The modality and current are selected for the target tissue and goal.

  1. Assessment

    Duration:10 min

The physiotherapist selects the current type and places the electrodes over the target area.

  2. Treatment

    Duration:15–20 min

The current is applied at a comfortable intensity; you feel a mild tingling or gentle contraction.

  3. Review

The electrodes are removed and progress is reviewed for the next session.

A typical course is 10–15 sessions over a 2–3 week stay.
