Smrdáky is a small, rural spa resort in western Slovakia, often referred to as the ‘Slovak Dead Sea’ thanks to the exceptionally high levels of hydrogen sulphide in the mineral water. For this reason the town has been a leading destination for treating skin disorders for more than 400 years.

Smrdáky’s exceptionally rich mineral water, containing more than 600 mg/l of hydrogen sulphide, is due to the formation of millions of years of sediment from aquatic life. This flow of water through the soil also yields a medicinal mud, the second potent healing factor in this resort.

History
Smrdáky has been a popular health destination since the 17th century. Smrdáci means 'stinker', the name given to local farmers when they visited fairs in neighbouring cities, because of the sulphurous odour of their natural resources.
