Understanding your condition

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin condition in which skin cells build up too quickly, forming raised, red patches covered with silvery scales. These plaques most often appear on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, and may itch or feel sore. Some people also develop nail changes or psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis tends to follow a relapsing course, with flare-ups and calmer periods. It is not contagious, and while it cannot be cured, it can be controlled so that the skin stays clearer for longer.

How spa treatment helps

Ensana's dermatological spa programmes use mineral-rich salt-water and sulphur balneotherapy to soften plaques, reduce scaling and calm inflammation, all under medical supervision. The salt lakes of Sovata are a long-established natural resource for skin conditions.

Complementary measures such as controlled phototherapy and time in a salt-air environment may further support the skin as part of a supervised course. A two- to three-week stay aims to clear the skin and lengthen the intervals between flare-ups.

Frequently asked

Questions about treating psoriasis

Answers to the questions guests ask most often before booking.

Treatment & suitability

  • No referral is required for a self-pay medical spa stay. Our resident physician assesses you on arrival and prescribes a programme suited to your condition.

  • Our physicians typically recommend a two- to three-week course (around 14–21 days) so the treatments have time to take effect. The exact length is confirmed during your medical assessment and is indicative only.

Your stay

  • Eligibility depends on your country and insurer. Many Czech and Slovak health funds reimburse medically indicated stays, while other guests attend on a self-pay basis. Our medical coordinator can advise on your options.

  • Mineral-rich sulphur and salt-water baths soften plaques, reduce scaling and calm inflammation. Combined with a supervised programme, they can help extend the periods between flare-ups.
