Alternating Temperature Bath

What is an alternating temperature bath

This treatment is similar in principle to the stepping bath and is based on Kneipp’s principle of hot and cold water alternately washing the body. You sit comfortably on a chair with your feet in a basin whilst a gentle jet of water is sprayed onto the feet at a warm temperature with intervals of cold water. The same procedure is repeated for your wrists and hands in the arm sink. The procedure lasts 15 minutes.

How an alternating temperature bath helps

This treatment stimulates the autonomous nerve system that regulates all basic body functions. Therefore it improves circulation and metabolism in all extremities, stimulates the immune system to be more efficient, and leaves one with a rejuvenated feeling.

Advisable for:

Musculoskeletal diseases, orthopaedic and accident rehabilitation, stress, fatigue, neurological diseases, immune disorders, modest cardiovascular disorders, vegetative dystonia

Not advisable for:

Infectious diseases, fever, acute inflammation, severe cardiovascular disorders (unstable angina, heart failure, shortness of breath), epilepsy, acute thrombosis, phlebitis, leg ulcers and other skin defects, incontinence, pregnancy, psychosis, alcohol or drug abuse, malignant tumours and blood disorders

Alternating Temperature Bath

  • What it is

A hydrotherapy treatment in which you move between warm water (around 38 C) and cool water (around 18-20 C) in timed cycles. The contrast is thought to make the blood vessels alternately widen and narrow, creating a gentle 'vascular pump' effect.

  • Who it's for

Guests who want to support sluggish peripheral circulation, ease tired or heavy legs and feel revitalised. It is often included as one element of a wider balneotherapy or recovery programme.

  • Expected results

Many guests describe warmer hands and feet, a lighter, less swollen feeling in the legs and an invigorated sense of refreshment afterwards. Benefits tend to build gradually over a course of sessions and can vary from person to person.
