TENS
What is TENS
TENS means transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. This means that nerve functions can be affected by electrical impulses transmitted through the skin. The electrical impulses stimulate the sensory nerves, which then activate the natural mechanisms of pain relief. The TENS procedure can also be applied to the muscles for relaxation. This type of electrotherapy is applied in short shocks, in waves or in a continuous flow of impulses. Different electrodes can be used, depending on requirements (neutral, button type or pen type). The electrodes are usually placed in the appropriate nerve root, which is not necessarily where you feel the pain.
Benefits of TENS
Depending on the frequency of very short pulses (these are typical for TENS), TENS can induce different effects: analgesic, muscle relaxation or indirect improvement in tissue metabolism. This treatment is especially effective for conditions that require relief from acute or chronic pain, especially in the back or neck area. TENS can also be used to reduce the tone of stiff and overworked muscles, as well as to treat painful trigger points.
